ISL 2020-21 Bengaluru FC vs NorthEast United FC: Machado’s brace save NorthEast’s blushes as both teams share spoils

ISL 2020-21 Bengaluru FC vs NorthEast United Full Score: 2-2; Bengaluru FC and NorthEast United FC play out a tantalising 2-2 draw. Both teams found the lead once but failed to hold onto it as they share spoils in the end.

Gerard Nus’ men took an early lead through a fortuitous strike from Machado (4th) but Bengaluru hit back through Juanan (13th) and substitute Udanta Singh (70th).

Just as the Blues looked set for a win, Machado (78th) struck again to ensure his team got a point.

NEUFC got off to the best possible start when they scored in just the fourth minute.

Rochharzela cut into the box and unleashed a shot at goal. His strike struck his teammate Machado and Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu could only look on in despair as the ball looped in.

But rather than get pegged down by the early goal, Bengaluru responded with a flurry of attacks and eventually found their equaliser as NEUFC’s lead last just over ten minutes.

A Rahul Bheke throw caused all sorts of chaos in the NEUFC box and it fell to Juanan, whose first-time shot found the back of net.

Bengaluru had a number of chances to take the lead in the first half and their coach Carles Cuadrat would have been rather displeased that they did not do so.

Ashique Kuruniyan, in the 19th minute, fired wide after a terrific run. Seven minutes later, Harmanjot Khabra found himself inside the box with an open sight on goal but his shot went wide as well.

NEUFC went close towards the end of the first half as Gurpreet had to stretch to keep a Machado freekick out. But it was Bengaluru who dominated the half and their 62 percent possession in that period was a testament to that.

The Blues started the second half in the same way as they had ended the first dominating ball possession, creating chances but failing to cash them.

Bengaluru finally grabbed the lead in the 70th minute after some lax defending from the Highlanders.

Sunil Chhetri won a header at the edge of the box and directed it towards the far-post.

Dylan Fox should have cleared it but let it roll into the path of the onrushing Udanta, whose shot crept in under goalkeeper Gurmeet’s hands.

On the touchline, Cuadrat appeared ecstatic but his joy didn’t last long as Juanan went from hero to villain as his failure to deal with a ball from midfield allowed Machado to free himself and slot past Gurpreet and grab the equaliser.

The goal led to a frenetic final quarter with both teams getting chances to score a winner.

ISL 2020-21: Bengaluru FC vs NorthEast United Live Score and Commentary

BFC Coach- Carles Cuadrat “We were trying our best to get the three points. But the last goal was not possible. [Best performance this season?] I think so. The guys are getting fit and ready. It’s a step-by-step process. We spent 2 hours to get to the stadium because of some problems on the road. We are doing our best in this bubble situation so is the ISL. [On returning to attacking form of 2018-19?] It’s question of moments and confidence of the players. The guys are working anf doing well. Sometimes you score and you have a good dynamic. Hope next game we get our strikers to get scoring.

NEUFC coach- Gerard Nus “We wanted to get the three points. The way the game went I can take this point as a positive. Last game was three days ago. 21 players took their chances so I am proud of the team. [On subs] To be honest we have always have the ideas of Plan A, B and C and also what happens in the game. We need to prevent the injuries as well so need this kind of rotation in the team. Players are doing well on the training as wel. [On goals] As far as the ball goes in… These goals are something we worked on.”

70′- GOOOOAALL!

Udanta Singh gets his name on the scoresheet as Bengaluru take the lead for the very first time. A howler from Dylan Fox and Udanta’s pace gets him ahead of the defender. A shocker from Gurmeet as well as he cannot get down faster.

68′- The referee has a word with Carles on the touchline. Carles seems upset about a decision which went against his team.

64′- EXCELLENT SAVE!

Stunning save from Gurmeet Singh. Kristian Opseth’s first shot on target in the ISL. This is phenomenal keeping and phenomenal football overall!!! Wonderful keeping on both sides.

61′- Wonderful hold-up play by Opseth, but comes to nothing as Chhetri doesn’t have the legs to capitalize.
60′-  SUBSTITUTION NEUFC
Kwesi Appiah is replace by Idrissa Sylla. Can Sylla inspire his team to a victory?

34′- Offside
Ashique Kuruniyan dashes forward through the middle and plays a very good through ball to his left to find Deshorn Brown. He takes a shot which is well over the post. Would not have counted had he had blasted it in the net as the linesman had his flag up for offside.

32′- Yellow Card

Rochhaerzela goes into the book for a foul on Ashique Kuruniyan.

29′- Juananan brings down Suhair and concedes a free-kick. The big Spaniard escapes a booking for this one.

26′- Harmanjot Khabra with a lovely chance to give his side the lead but he wastes it. Sunil Chhetri takes a quick throw in on the left side which sets free Ashique Kuruniyan. He takes a touch and gets inside the box on the byline. He then cuts it back inside the box to find Harmanjot Khabra. He does not hit it first time but gets it inside to his weaker left foot. He then has a shot with it but his effort is away from target.

8′- A teasing cross comes into the NEUFC box from the left, Kwesi Appiah who was back in his own box to defends the set-piece, hoicks the ball out for a throw-in to BFC from the right touchline.

7′- Brown is played down the left channel for a 3 vs 4 opportunity on the break but Lambot tarcks his run to cut out his cross.

4′- Goooooal!

Incredible start for NEUFC and they have broken the deadlock very early in this game, courtesy a very wicked deflection! The move was started by Luis Machado who shows some brilliant skills in the middle of the park and lays it up to Suhair Vadakkepeedika on the right.

Prediction: Bengaluru FC vs NorthEast United FC

The analytics shows that NorthEast United FC has clear supremacy over Bengaluru FC. BFC were champions in 2018-19 ISL season. BFC-team, Head-Coach Carles Cuadrat has question-marks over a couple of spots in his starting XI at the moment. They kicked off their pre-season without any overseas players. Second-choice goalkeeper Lalthuammawia Ralte started in goal ahead of Gurpreet Singh Sandhu while Joe Zoherliana and Pratik Chaudhuri made their debuts for the club. Both Cleiton Silva and Kristian Opseth are likely to start in attack for Bengaluru FC, alongside Sunil Chhetri and Udanta Singh.

On the other hand, NEUFC-team, every year there have been changes to their coaching staff and playing staff, which leads to a less settled side. Even in the goal-scoring department they didn’t look that good as they scored only 16 goals throughout the season. So, they will need to improve all over the pitch to find success. But, they had a main key player Subhashish Roy, who has made a lot of saves to keep them alive in many matches in the last season. They had a new signing of 2 overseas strikers Idrissa Sylla and Kwesi Appiah. So, they will expect to see more goals scored compared to last season. We expect NEUFC to win this match.
