ISL 2020-21 Chennaiyin FC vs FC Goa: Chennaiyin’s playoffs hope hanging by a thread as Goa look to cement playoff spot; Watch CFC vs FCG Live Streaming Online on Hotstar-
Since losing to Chennaiyin FC in December, FC Goa have stretched their unbeaten run to nine games in the ongoing Indian Super League. On Saturday, Goa will once again face Chennaiyin at the GMC Bambolim Stadium. But this time, Goa will be looking to cement their playoff berth with a win against the struggling Chennaiyin side.
For Chennaiyin, their hopes of reaching the playoffs look bleak but they are not out of the running yet. Three wins in the last three games could very well open up a chance to the top-four, although a lot will depend on other teams’ results. For now, Chennaiyin are up for a do-or-die match on Saturday. If they lose or draw, they will be out of contention from the playoffs.
Chennaiyin are coming back off a 0-1 defeat to Jamshedpur. An own goal in the 90th minute saw Csaba Laszlo’s side lose. The Romanian coach rued missing chances that have plagued his side the whole season. With just 11 goals in 17 matches, Chennaiyin are the worst attacking side in the league.
“We had a big chance to win the game against Jamshedpur. They had just one shot on target but unfortunately, we conceded an own goal and lost a game at the last minute. This is very painful because we had good chances to score and win the game,” Laszlo said.
However, now the focus is on getting nine points from three games and for that, Chennaiyin will have to find goals by converting their chances. Chennaiyin have the second-best in the league in terms of shot and third in creating chances. But they have failed to convert bulk of their chances.
“We have to take it how it is and we have to concentrate on the next three games. It is most important that we go out against Goa and play for the club and show that we are still a good team,” Laszlo added.
Goa eye playoff spot
While Goa have remained unbeaten in the last nine matches, they have won only three of them, dropping 12 points in the process. But with a last-minute equaliser in the last match, Juan Ferrando’s side will look to bounce back and convert the draws into a win. They are still in the running for a top-place finish and winning the last three games could see them seal another AFC Champions League slot. However, for that, they will also need other matches to go their way.
With 24 points from 16 games, Goa are placed third on the league table. But in five draws in the last five games are not what Ferrando was hoping for. By now, their playoff berth should have been sealed. A win against Chennaiyin will take them closer to a top-4 finish.
“This team is working hard in training and in matches. The most important thing is, they have a strong personality and they want to win all the time. I’m very happy because when the score isn’t good or when we are in a difficult moment, they keep going and display a strong mentality,” Ferrando said.
