ISL 2020 : East Bengal ready with investor on board, will ISL debut happen this year ?

The long-cherished dream of East Bengal football club to join the Indian Super League can now become a reality.

In a dramatic turn of events over the past couple of weeks, Indian football heavyweights East Bengal are set to have a new investor and could be making their debut in ISL 2020.

It has been learnt that Benu Gopal Bangur-run cement manufacturer Shree Cement will be the club’s new investor. The nitty-gritty of the new joint venture between the parties – two months after the club’s separation with previous investor Quess Corp – has been agreed upon, but the details are yet to be known.

It has also been learnt that state chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee played a significant role in helping the club rope in a new investor. The club officials called on the chief minister on a few occasions, desperately looking for a lifeline in making the ISL grade.

According to the sources announcement in regard to the East Bengal – Shree Cement tie-up can happen in the next 24 hours.

ISL 2020 : Can East Bengal play in Indian Super League this year ?

According to the sources, even if all goes well on the front of East Bengal – Shree Cement tie up front, it is unlikely that East Bengal can play the 2020-21 season. The sources in the Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the organizing company of ISL told InsideSport, the inclusion of East Bengal in this season of ISL looks impossible at this stage.

“Club like East Bengal will always be welcomed in ISL. But getting ready or their inclusion in ISL for the season starting in November will be too much to ask at this stage. Let’s see how things moves forward”, said the source to InsideSport.

East Bengal at their end is keen to play the season this year as well. According to the informed sources, club is extremely keen to make ISL debut in the same year as their counterparts Mohun Bagan.

Will organizers make an exception for East Bengal and give them entry into ISL, only time will tell. But without any doubt, the club with a pedigree of East Bengal will bring in lot of new flavor and energy to ISL.

Especially when the season’s ISL will be played without spectators under strict pandemic-related restrictions, a derby between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in the top league would provide the much-needed excitement to it.
