ISL 2021: Two time ISL Champions to bottom half team- What’s gone wrong with Chennaiyin FC this season?

ISL 2021-What’s gone wrong with Chennaiyin FC this season: Two time ISL champions Chennaiyin FC have not had results going their way so far this season. The Chennai based franchise has only won two of their games and has had four goalless draws.

Chennaiyin FC currently occupies the 8th position in the ISL 2020-21 table with 11 points from 10 matches and have gone winless in their last four matches. Despite having a prolific attack, Chennaiyin FC (CFC) are also the only team yet to score 10 goals this season- Why is that?

ISL 2020-21: Chennaiyin (CFC) has struggled to find the net despite having no troubles approaching it- Ball progression isn’t an issue for Chennaiyin. They have the most touches in the opposition boxing the league at 233, and have taken 108 shots (3 rd best) which means that they are approaching the goal steadfast and surely. The problem then, lies in finishing.

ISL 2020-21: Chennaiyin FC’s big-names have failed to deliver: Following up, when it comes to poor finishing, one needs to look at the team’s strikers. Strikers Esmael Goncalves, Fatkhullo Fatkhulloev and Jakub Sylvester have scored only two goals combined, with Fatkhulloev going scoreless. Rahim Ali has scored two goals and Lallianzuala Chhangte has scored one, meaning goals from midfield aren’t arriving either. Sylvester (6) and Chhangte (4) have combined missed 10 big chances, despite having 89 touches in the box this season.

ISL 2020-21: Injury to skipper Rafael Crivellaro has added to CFC’s woes-The Brazilian’s creativity and attacking nous has been direly missed, with no ready made replacements. That has led to Csaba Laszlo changing the primary tactics in the middle of the season. They have roped in ex-FC Goa star Manuel Lanzarote, but it remains to be seen how he gels with the squad and how impactful a signing he will be.
