IPL 2020 KKR vs MI : strength and weakness

IPL 2020 Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Strengths

Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2020- Cream of the crop all-rounders

In Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, KKR arguably have IPL 2020’s two best all-rounders, and both Caribbean cricketers add immense value and balance to the side. The IPL’s best teams always have world-class all-rounders, and KKR have the cream of the crop.

Even Pat Cummins, who is guaranteed to play almost all games for KKR, is handy with the bat, while Kamlesh Nagarkoti’s all-round skills have garnered praise from experts.

Apart from Narine and Russell, Dinesh Karthik can also call upon Chris Green, who has captained the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL. The Australian off-spinner might not get games early on in IPL 2020, but he is certainly a quality T20 player.

Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2020: Unmatched depth in overseas players

Pat Cummins, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Chris Green, Eoin Morgan, Tom Banton and Lockie Ferguson – KKR have perhaps the best overseas contingent in IPL 2020.

The team, which is yet to announce a replacement for Harry Gurney, will see healthy competition for the 4 overseas slots in the XI, although 3 are all but finalised in the lead-up to the tournament. KKR’s foreign players are also highly experienced, with Eoin Morgan also England’s captain in the white-ball formats.

KKR’s depth in overseas players will ensure that they can give the Indian players, who are arguably lesser in quality, extended runs of games.

IPL 2020 Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Weaknesses

Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2020: Indian batting contingent looks thin

Keeping aside the quality of Indian players, KKR still have to fill the remaining spots with Indian players, and they are found wanting in the batting department.

Apart from captain Dinesh Karthik, only Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana have some degree of IPL experience. The releases of Chris Lynn and Robin Uthappa have left their batting lineup devoid of experience and aggression.

Rinku Singh, Siddhesh Lad, Rahul Tripathi and Nikhil Naik are the only other options, and most of them haven’t had sufficient IPL experience.

Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2020: Lack of depth in the spin department

KKR have always been a team that has relied on quality spinners, often fielding a three-pronged spin attack consisting of Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav at the Eden Gardens.

Chawla is now part of the Chennai Super Kings, and KKR chose to replace him with Tamil Nadu mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who has bowled only three overs in the IPL so far. Chris Green is another option, but he might not make the playing XI in the presence of other quality options.

M Siddharth is the only other Indian tweaker at KKR’s disposal, and he is uncapped at the IPL level. Even Kuldeep, who is expected to be one of the leaders of the spin attack, picked up only 4 wickets in 9 IPL games last season, at an economy rate of 8.66.

IPL 2020 Mumbai Indians (MI) Strengths

Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020 : One of the best top orders

The addition of Chris Lynn into the squad will add another dynamic to the 4-time IPL winners at the top of the batting order.

The destructive opener is expected to partner South African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock. The De Kock-Lynn opening combination might even push one of the greatest white-ball openers the game has ever seen, Rohit Sharma – to No. 3.

Also, with Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan viable options at No. 4, MI could win most of their games in the first phase of their batting innings.

Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020 : A very strong Indian core

In Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, MI have three players who are some of the first names on the Indian cricket team-sheet.

Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar have been on the fringes of the Indian T20I team for some time, and are not regulars only because of the presence of Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal respectively.

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have also had sufficient IPL experience, leading to MI having a sizeable part of their playing XI fixed already which other are struggling to muster.

As most of the IPL teams are waiting & apprehensive of their foreign recruits joining them late from CPL & England-Australian bilateral exchange – M.I is sitting pretty will very less dependency on the outsiders.
2. Weaknesses

Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020: Insufficient depth in the spin department

Had the IPL 2020 happened in India, MI would have had a lethal bowling attack. However, with the current shift to UAE, the Rohit Sharma-led team might be exposed by quality players of spin.

Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya are the only two spinners in the XI, and both are are run-saving rather than wicket-taking options. MI needed a spinner who depends on flight and guile to pick up wickets rather than Krunal and Chahar, who are both quick through the air and not massive turners of the ball.

Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020: Pace attack heavily reliant on Burmah

Barring Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah, MI’s pace attack doesn’t look great on paper, or least the players’ numbers don’t.

Trent Boult, who has an economy rate of 8.78 over the course of his IPL career, played only 5 games last season. New signing Nathan Coulter-Nile hasn’t played a single game in the last two IPL seasons, and if he manages to make it into the playing XI, he might be thrown into the deep end.

Dhawal Kulkarni is the only other quality Indian option, and the former Rajasthan Royals pacer has conceded runs at an economy rate of over 9 in all the previous three IPL seasons with only 13 wickets to show for. Much of the responsibility might fall on Bumrah’s shoulders, and the Indian spearhead might be left with too much to do on his own, especially while returning from such a long break.
