Kolkata Knight Riders are all set to lock horns against Mumbai Indians at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. It will be the campaign opener for KKR while MI will be playing their second match. The Rohit Sharma-led side lost their first match by five wickets against Chennai Super Kings in the season opener. They will now face a tough examination against KKR as well.
The team looked rusty with many players sporting lockdown waistlines which attracted a lot of criticism on social media. Sharma and Quinton de Kock started off well with couple of boundaries but threw in the towel soon. Same was the story for Suryaumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya.
Saurabh Tiwari as No.4 also did not seem like the best choice for the Mumbai side. He scored 42 off 31 balls but the lack of rotating strikes is a big concern.
Moreover, sending Kieron Pollard after Hardik Pandya seemed a bit odd, given the face what the Windies player can do. His performance at number 6 is almost always curtailed due to a lack of available deliveries or batting partners.
Mumbai’s middle-order is pretty similar to that of their opponents Kolkata. It is the bowling which is a concern. Jasprit Bumrah looked out of touch in the previous match. He lacked the confidence. It was evident by the fact that he did not try to bowl many yorkers — which is his main weapon — and conceded 43 runs.
However, all was not bad in the Mumbai camp. The fact that Trent Boult looked in good form will give them a sigh of relief. He will once again play an important role against KKR in getting out the likes of Gill and Rusell who can be big game changers.
Also, they can try Mitchell McClenaghan or Nathan Coulter-Nile over James Pattinson. The bottom line is Mumbai Indians have always taken their own sweet time to gain momentum and this was it was no different either.
Dinesh Karthik-side, on the other hand, will want to start the campaign on a positive note with a win. The team will be banking hopes on the likes of Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine, Karthik and Eoin Morgan for it.
The good thing is, KKR have got the time to analyse the conditions in UAE and know how the pitches are turning out to be. Unlike the common belief that UAE favours spin, the pitches so far have been all about pace and bounce. The curators have left grass on the surface to prevent them form cracking up and to allow stroke-play.
Pace and bounce is all KKR need to get off to a winning start. Boasting the likes of Lockie Ferguson, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi, all of whom can hit 145 kmph regularly. Moreover, it has not been all about pace. As the day progress, dew plays a role too. This is where mystery spinner Kuldeep Yadav can prove to be a nightmare for Mumbai batsmen.
In the batting department, expect to see Shubman Gill open for KKR. He is an exceptional talent with a great batting temperament. This IPL will be very important for him to cement a place in the Indian team ahead of the T20 world cup.
He can open with Sunil Narine if the latter is fit to play. The Windies all-rounder missed the last few CPL games and maybe benched for the opener.
Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell comprise a very strong middle-order. The English batsman has been in brilliant six-hitting form, while Russell had a productive CPL as well.
