La Liga 2020-21: A first-half goal from Yannick Carrasco saw Atletico Madrid defeating Barcelona for the first time in a decade in La Liga and in doing so, they equalled Real Sociedad’s tally of 20 points in the Spanish League this season.
“We are very happy to have won, it had been a long time without a victory against Barça,” Carrasco said.
Moreover, Barcelona also lost defender Gerard Pique to injury to cap a bad night. He hurt his knee during a collision with Atletico’s Angel Correa and the Spaniard was crying as he left the pitch in the 63rd and was then seen bent over in the tunnel.
Barcelona confirmed after the game that Pique had sprained his right knee and are “waiting for more tests to ascertain the extent of the injury”.
There is no timescale on how long Pique could be out for but reports in Spain suggest he could be sidelined for up to six months.
Notably, Barca talisman Lionel Messi put in a lackluster performance but had one of the best chances in the 41st after a nice pass from Jordi Alba. The Argentina playmaker had his angled shot saved by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Messi also missed from a free-kick later in the second half.
Meanwhile, the win gave Atletico a nine-point advantage over Barcelona after eight matches. Diego Simeone’s team is level with Real Sociedad at the top of the standings with 20 points and has a game in hand. Sociedad visits promoted Cadiz on Sunday.
Also, Atlético extended its unbeaten run in the league to 24 matches. Its last league loss was against city rival Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in February.
On the other hand, Barcelona dropped to 10th place, staying with 11 points.
