INDIA vs ENGLAND 3rd Test Day 1 Stumps: Ashwin-Axar spin combo and Rohit’s unbeaten fifty put India ahead in pink-ball Test- Opening batsman Rohit Sharma on Wednesday scored his 12th test fifty and provided a steady start to India. But,India has lost three wickets in their first innings in the last session of Day 1 at Narendra Modi Stadium. England have picked the crucial wickets of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara in India’s first innings. Kohli was dismissed for 27 off 58 balls by left-arm spinner Jack Leach.

Earlier today, captain Joe Root’s decision to win the toss and bat first backfired as the visitors were all out for 112 runs. They lost their last six wickets in the second session. The last seven wickets yielded just 38 runs. Crawley’s effort was the only silver lining for England. Having missed the first two Tests due to a freak wrist injury, the stylish right-hander’s driving was elegance personified as he hit 10 boundaries during his innings.

Captain Joe Root was the second highest scorer for England with a 37-ball 17 before he was dismissed by Ashwin.

Patel (21.4-6-38-6) grabbed his second five-for in his second Test while Ashwin (16-6-26-3) took three. Ishant Sharma, who is playing his 100th Test, also picked up the first wicket.

India made two changes, Jasprit Bumrah came in for Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar in for Kuldeep Yadav. On the other hand, Joe Root-led England made four changes. Anderson, Archer, Bairstow, Crawley back in. Burns, Lawrence, Stone, Moeen Ali out.

Both Virat and Co and Joe Root-led sides are eyeing a victory in the crucial fixture. The result will decide the fate of these two teams in ICC World Test Championship Final qualification. The four-match Test series is currently level 1-1. While the hosts outclassed the opposition to win the second Test by 317 runs, England had registered victory in the opening Test in Chennai.

India, who are hosting their second pink-ball Test, would like to keep their 100% win record in the D/N Test at home. On the other hand, England is yet to register an away pink-ball Test victory. They have lost to Australia and New Zealand on previous occasions.

Jack Leach to Pujara, THATS OUT!! Lbw!!

Jack Leach to Pujara, out Lbw!! Wickets in consecutive overs. Leach slides one past the inside edge onto the front pad and up goes the finger. There were two noises but it was front pad onto back pad. Little doubt there. The length is the key here. After the couple of deliveries that were too full, Leach pulls it back a touch meaning that Pujara isn’t able to smother it. From there, it’s a toss-up between whether it’ll turn or it’ll go straight on. Pujara picks the former, plays outside the line but this simply slides through. What a blow this is. A duck for Pujara who’s usually so good against spin but is having his share of troubles in this series. Pujara lbw b Jack Leach 0(4)

8.30 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Jofra Archer to Shubman Gill, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

Jofra Archer to Shubman Gill, out Caught by Zak Crawley!! Archer hurries him with the short ball! This has gone straight up and will be the first wicket for England. No mistake from Crawley at short midwicket. Short ball that’s a touch outside off. Gill is not in a great position as he looks to pull it away. It wasn’t a fiercely quick delivery – 139kph – but Archer has this ability to catch you by surprise. Shubman Gill c Zak Crawley b Jofra Archer 11(51)

8 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Gill is finally off-the-mark off his 27th delivery.

Broad to Shubman Gill, FOUR, Gill is finally off the mark off his 27th ball. Capitalises on a ball that’s a touch short and pretty wide.

Axar to Foakes, THATS OUT!! Bowled!!

Axar to Foakes, out Bowled!! That’s it. It’s all over. Foakes tries to cut it and has dragged it on to his sticks. That was the arm ball and it arrowed in. In fact he has missed it and has been clean bowled. For a second I thought he had played on. But such has been the deception from Axar. He has been tremendously accurate. Six-fer for Axar and England have been rolled over again. Foakes b Axar 12(58)

18:09 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Axar to Broad, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

Axar to Broad, out Caught by Bumrah!! Top-edge on the slog sweep and has been taken in the deep. That was a flighted delivery and Broad fell for the bait, Went for the big booming sweep and holed out in the deep. Fifer for Axar. The home boy has done it. Carries his good form from Chennai to Ahmedabad. He has literally brought that 22 yards along with him as well. Broad tried defying the bait but fell for it finally. Broad c Bumrah b Axar 3(29)

17:32 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Ashwin to Jack Leach, THATS OUT!! Caught!!

Ashwin to Jack Leach, out Caught by Pujara!! The spinners are having fun out there. Ashwin bowls this much fuller and drags Leach onto the front foot, the England spinner falls into the trap and gets a thick outside edge low to the right of Pujara at second slip. The catch has been reviewed by the umpires and the soft signal is out. Telly umpire checks several angles and concludes that the fingers are underneath the ball. England eight down. Jack Leach c Pujara b Ashwin 3(14)

17:29 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

“Bairstow, Crawley and Pope have been dismissed on a ball that hasn’t turned,” Cricket statistician Sarang Bhalerao on Twitter.

17:22 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Axar to Jofra Archer, out Bowled!! Too good. Ravi Jadeja would be absolutely proud of what he’s seeing right now. Axar Patel, the second best in slider execution in Indian cricket, has made Archer look very silly there. He gave the hint the previous delivery but Archer couldn’t comprehend. Gets stuck in the crease and the slow-subtle drifter straightens enough before curving in to smack the top of off. Jofra Archer b Axar 11(18)

17:15 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

“The pitch is not turning as much as Chennai did on Day 1 and yet England find themselves in a hole, says Kshitij Jain of ESPNCricinfo

17:03 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Axar to Stokes, out Lbw!! Stokes caught like a rabbit in the headlights there. He was constantly prodding forward fearing the lack of bounce, but on this occasion, Axar dragged his length back and aimed for the top of off. Stokes, in two minds, decides to play a late-hurried defence whilst being stuck in the crease. Hits him adjacent to off-stump. The review was more in hope that it would miss the stumps, no dice. Stokes lbw b Axar 6(24)

16:57 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Ashwin to Ollie Pope, out Bowled!! The off pole has been smashed. Ravi Ashwin is a master at setting up the batters and poor Ollie Pope had no clue about this. Stands puzzled for a fleeting moment before leaving the crease. The skiddy drifter from Ash and it curled in enough beat Pope all ends up on the outside edge. Pitches outside leg and hits the top of off. Top stuff and the skipper is pumped.

16:26 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Axar to Zak Crawley, out Lbw!! Axar Patel, take a bow sir! He was toying with Crawley getting one to slide and the other to turn and bounce. Confused him so nicely for the last few deliveries. Crawley wasn’t sure when to come forward and when to stay back. Got beaten doing both multiple times. And now Axar bowls a slider that goes on with the angle from the round wicket, Crawley expected turn and played the forward defence. The ball sneaked past the inside edge and impact was in line with middle Zak Crawley lbw b Axar 53(84)

16:14 PM: IND VS ENG 3RD TEST LIVE UPDATES

Joe Rot is OUT! lbw b Ashwin 17(37)

Root pays the price for hanging back to a fairly full ball. As soon as the ball hit the pad, he was shaking his head in disappointment for misjudging the length on that delivery. Could have easily negotiated that off the front foot. But he plays oustide the line of the ball that gripped the surface and turned. Umpire Anil Kumar Chaudhary had to figure out if it was turning too much to miss leg stump. He didn’t think it would and raised the finger. Ball-tracker agrees with him, hitting the top of leg by a fair share it says and the England captain is off.

Axar to Bairstow, out Lbw!! Aired through the arm ball, Bairstow prodded forward and missed the line. He thought he was forward enough and didn’t hesitate to take review. The ball was arrowed in straight and three reds is what the ball tracker suggested. Bairstow is gone for a blob. Not a happy welcome back! The umpire was sure though and hence England have ended up losing a review.

11.50PM: Team India’s conundrum to pick Playing XI- Check why?

Virat Kohli and Indian team management will be in a conundrum picking the playing XI. With the 22-yards expected to dry out in the heat, India would be tempted to go for Kuldeep Yadav, who has a boasting record with the pink ball in first-class cricket.

But Umesh Yadav, who is returning to the squad, comes in with his unique skills on skiddy Indian pitches. Jasprit Bumrah was rested from the second Test but it will take a last-minute injury to keep him out of this one.

As for England, Joe Root during the pre-match conference kept his cards close to his chest but five changes can be expected. Dan Lawrence could be benched, with Jonny Bairstow likely to come in at number three. Zak Crawley’s return to fitness could put Rory Burns’ position at risk. There could be a raft of changes in the bowling attack too. James Anderson and Jofra Archer are set to return while Chris Woakes or Dom Bess could play as well, depending on whether England opt to play two spinners.
