Procam International, the company that has made India run marathons is now launching the Indian Grand Prix of the Seas. Next month, seven teams with two boats each, will compete in the motorboat racing championship at Mumbai.
The Grand Prix of the Seas has been conceived by P1 Global in partnership with Procam International. The inaugural race will be called Nexa P1 Powerboat, India Grand Prix of the Seas.
The five-tier racing structure will culminate in a World Cup in 2020. The World Cup will be held biennially after 2020. That will, progressively, take the race to the global stage.
India’s largest car company Maruti Suzuki’s sales channel brand, Nexa, has joined hands with the race as its title sponsor.
Sony ESPN and Sony Pix will telecast the event live, to be held between March 3-5. It will generate nine hours of programme from the event. A gamified graphics interface to be followed live on an internet-connected device for real-time access to gamified positions, telemetric race data & analytics in addition to the television broadcast will also be provided for the first time.
With two boats each, the seven teams will race on the 28-feet boats powered by HP engines. The boats can reach 120 kilometres per hour speed on water, equal to twice that speed on land. The P1 Panther’s design allows it to race in just six feet of water, giving close the shore racing experience for fans.
The boats will race each other on a 5.2 kilometre pre-defined race track. The skills of the pilots and the navigators will decide the pole position.

“Procam created a national movement in running, and now we are aiming to create a global movement on water,” Anil Singh, MD, Procam International said.
Importantly, Nexa P1 Powerboat has tied up other partnerships with four weeks to go for the event. Among them are Trident Hotel as the hospitality partner and Sony ESPN is the broadcast partner. While Radio Mirchi will be the radio partner, Maersk will be the shipping partner and Nautica the style partner.
Maharashtra’s tourism department has tied up with the event to showcase Mumbai’s seafront for tourists.
