With Messi joining the star-studded team alongside the arrivals of the abovementioned superstars, PSG’s wage bill has risen astronomically. The Persian club is now under pressure to sell off players and balance their books.
PSG sports director Leonardo has a tough task at hand and will have to work incredibly hard in the transfer window. He will have to be as effective in getting rid of players as he was while acquiring PSG’s latest signings. The French giants could face major issues if they face any problems with sales this summer.
Despite having nearly 30 players on the team roster, none of the PSG players have gathered interest from any clubs. Layvin Kurzawa and Thilo Kehrer are the only two PSG stars that are rumored to get the attention of clubs following the sale of Mitchel Bakker.
PSG’s expenses this summer are have exceeded the clubs’ income. Their income has the only entry of 7 million euros which was generated due to the sale of Bakker to Bayer Leverkusen. On the other hand, PSG signed Acharf Hakimi for €60 million.
Their expenditures in terms of salaries have also skyrocketed with PSG paying close to 300 million euros in wages every year after Messi’s acquisition. Lionel Messi tops the list pocketing 40m and being the highest wage earner followed by Neymar and Mbappé. While the Brazilian earns 36 million, the French star’s salary is reported to be in the region of 25 million Euros.
Apart from the Bakker, PSG has not received any concrete offers for several of the transferrable players. The footballers are also believed to hang back and are in no hurry to leave the Parisian outfit. Players like Ander Herrera, Sergio Rico, Mauro Icardi, Rafinha, Gueye, Diallo are named amongst others who could be sold in order to generate revenue.
According to Juan Branco, PSG could is expected to suffer losses in the region of 200- 300 million euros for the 2021-22 campaign. The losses could go upto as high as 500 million euros if they fail to sell players.
In order to comply with the French Professional Football League rules, PSG would be required to sell players worth approx 180 million this season. However, the French giants can take a breather for some time as the French soccer League has eased the ‘financial fair play’ rules 2023. The French giants will be eager to get rid of the deadwood and before falling into trouble in the upcoming years.
