The government is taking up an ambitious programme to promote football among children in the country. Mission 11 Million has been initiated to take football to 11 million children across India said Vijay Goel, the minister of youth affairs and sports, reports Economic Times from Kolkata.
“FIFA U-17 World Cup is being organised in partnership with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and in order to create football culture, Mission 11 Million has been initiated where through 15000 schools and mass contact programmes the mission would be accomplished,” said Mr Goel. “Various activities are being organised across all (Indian) states to promote and popularise the three phase programme by organizing workshops and festivals etc. The key idea of Mission XI Million is that every child should have the opportunity to play the world’s most popular sport.”
Mr Goel has also requested the members of Parliament to help in popularizing the sport by organizing football tournaments at villages, block and district level. He said, “Sports Authority of India can assist MPs in organizing a programme if a Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre exists in their constituency. MPs can also help in creating mini clubs for local level games and competitions and by utilizing their MPLAD fund for New Sporting Hubs and festivals.”
The FIFA U-17 World Cup in October this year according to the sports minister will ensure that the India becomes the bright spot in world football.
