Regarding application downloads, an estimated figure of more than 12 billion last year in India, which pushed the country to overtake the United States. According to Forbes magazine, India will reach 37 billion app downloads in 2022, a growth of 207%, the highest in the world. This trend is explained by an explosion in monthly mobile data consumption, which has increased by 2,500% over the past four years.

Unrivalled Price for 4G

This success of applications in India is linked to two main factors. The first is the arrival on the market of the operator Jio in 2016, in partnership with Reliance. Jio-Reliance has truly revolutionized the mobile phone industry in India by offering free calls and at rock bottom prices for 4G. The arrival of Jio, which has captured nearly 20% of the market in just two years, has brought about a change in usage patterns, including significantly more video consumption. The second factor is the arrival of Chinese brands of low-cost smartphones, which allow a greater number of Indians, especially in rural areas, to have access to this content, without having to spend a lot of money on a Samsung device or an iPhone.

TikTok, a Very Trendy Application

The WhatsApp app is unsurprisingly the most widely used in India, responsible for 50% of the time Indian users spend on apps alone. Streaming video applications such as Netflix and its more local versions are among the most widely used. The Chinese app TikTok has been a big hit in India this year, where it now has 15 million users. TikTok lets you create your own videos by imitating dialogue from movies or hit songs. Several Bollywood stars have taken to it and the app is even starting to have its own stars in India, strangers who now have several million followers.

Tinder, the Android App That Generates the Most Income

The ShareIt application for content sharing has 400 million users in India, nearly one-third of the number of users worldwide. And of course, the Tinder dating app is the top earning Android app in India. While Indians are fans of apps, they are careful about spending their money. India is only 5th in the world in spending on apps, followed by South Korea in fourth place.
