Wicketkeepers, with few exceptions, have emerged the true heroes for their respective teams in the Indian Premier League 2018. The glovemen behind the stumps are making a more significant contribution on the other side of the timber with the willow.
The top 15 run-getters in the IPL 2018 have four wicketkeepers. Delhi Daredevils Rishabh Pant and Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni figure in the top five table. Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Dinesh Karthik is leading the team by example. Kings XI Punjab’s opener Lokesh Rahul has been among the top contributors to his team’s cause in his dual role.
The Moneyball IPL 2018 Impact Points in the top 15 has five wicketkeeper-batsmen. Pant leads the chart for stumpers with a second position on the Moneyball Impact Rank. With 375 runs from 9 games is only behind the Orange Cap holder Chennai Super Kings veteran Ambatti Rayudu (9 games, 391 runs). Dhoni is also among the only nine batsmen to aggregate 300 or more runs in this IPL season so far.
The value keepers bring to the table was evident in the IPL auction, too. Other than Dhoni, who inked a ₹15 crore retention deal with Chennai Super Kings, Rahul and Dinesh Karthik have lucrative ₹11 crore salary purses from their respective franchisees. Promising youngsters Pant and Sanju Samson have both got ₹8 crore deals – and both have given performances worth putting a premium on their IPL salaries.
