MS Dhoni was ‘Very Lucky’ as Indian captain says Gautam Gambhir

MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains to lead Team India, even in the history of sport to win all three ICC trophies.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes MS Dhoni was very lucky captain. Speaking on Star Sports Show Cricket Connected, Gambhir said that Sourav Ganguly had to work very hard as captain and that the presence of veterans made it very easy for Dhoni to lead the 2011 World Cup side.

Dhoni has been a very lucky captain because he got an amazing team in every format. Captaining 2011 World Cup team was very easy for Dhoni because we had players like Sachin, Sehwag, myself, Yuvraj, Yusuf, Virat, so he had got the best teams, while Ganguly had to work very hard for it, and as a result Dhoni won so many trophies,” he said.

MS Dhoni, who took over as captain in 2007/08, did have a number of experienced players in the Test side but Team India had a few new players in the 2011 World Cup squad. Dhoni had a tough task in Test cricket following the retirements of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid. The likes of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane stepped up and have done well. Kohli now leads Team India while Rahane is deputy to him in red-ball cricket.

Dhoni, who retired from Tests in 2014, led India to 27 wins in 60 matches. In ODIs, Team India won 110 out of 200 ODIs under his captaincy.
