Indian Premier League Mumbai Indians owner Mukesh Ambani continues to be the richest sports team owner across the world.

Asia’s richest person, Indian business magnate Mukesh Ambani remains the undisputed leader among the richest billionaires around the world to own a sports team as his networth in the past one year has grown to $50 billion.

The Reliance Industries chairman and managing director, Ambani’s sports business group subsidiaries own Indian Premier League (IPL) team Mumbai Indians along with the co-ownership of  the premier football league in the country – Indian Super League (ISL) – with Star India.

Only a few among the business tycoons owning billion dollar empires have invested part of their wealth in the business of sports. While some among them are die-hard sports enthusiasts, others find professional sports a lucrative investment option with igh revenue streams.

Mukesh Ambani remains the richest among the business tycoons who also have interest in sports IPs. He had also topped the table in November last year, when his gross net worth was reported at $ 40.1 billion. It is up by $10 billion to $ 50 billion now.

The brand value of Mumbai Indians, the three-time IPL champions, was estimated to be $106 million in 2017 by Duff & Phelps. A 36% jump since 2016 made it one of the most valuable IPL teams and also the first franchise to cross $100 million mark among the IPL teams.

There are 58 billionaire owners of teams in major sports leagues around the world who are either majority shareholders or managing partners in the team. They collectively own 70 teams and are worth a combined $359 billion, according to report by national daily Indian Express.

NBA team Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer remains the second-richest sports team owner in the world and the wealthiest owner of an American sports team. In the last 12 months, his net worth has risen by 7% to $41.2 billion. Balmer, who retired as Microsoft CEO in 2014 and purchased the Clippers in 2014, has kept most his shares in the software giant.

Red Bull billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz has replaced Chinese business magnate Jack Ma in the third position with a net worth of $18.9 billion. Red Bull own multiple sports teams, with all serving as marketing opportunities for their core business. The company owns New York Red Bulls in MLS, RB Leipzig in Bundesliga, Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and Red Bull Brasil in Brazil as well as Formula One teams Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Toro Ross Honda.
