National Sports Day is celebrated every year in India on 29 August. The day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. First National Sports Day was celebrated in India on 29 August 2012 & since than the tradition continues to celebrate birth anniversary of country’s biggest sporting legend.

Why Indian Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand was so special? Talking about Indian sports, especially hockey in India is impossible without the mention of sports legend Dhyan Chand. The late hockey player was born on August 29, 1905. With his extraordinary goal-scoring feats, the sportsperson earned his name and fame in the field of Indian hockey. He earned three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

For his contribution towards Indian hockey, Dhyan Chand was also known as The Wizard or The Magician of hockey.

He has been conferred with several honours, including India’s third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1956. In addition to this, the Government of India also celebrates his birthday on August 29 as the National Sports Day.

“My humble tribute to the Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand ji on his birthday anniversary. He has been the inspiration of millions of sportspersons across the nation. Wishing everyone on #Nationalsportsday!” Jay Shah, Secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India tweeted.

“Sport brings hope and joy even in the most challenging circumstances. This #NationalSportsDay, make playing a habit. Keep ourselves and those around us happy,” Tendulkar tweeted.

Earlier, this month the Khel Ratna award was renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The award was earlier named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Major Dhyan Chand has been conferred with several honours, which includes India’s third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1956. He scored more than 400 goals in a career spanning over 22 years
