The National Basketball Association has appointed Scott Fleming as Head of Basketball Operations in India. Fleming is a former coach of Indian men’s national basketball team. He will oversee League’s youth and elite basketball development initiatives in India.
The NBA has announced that former Indian men’s national basketball team coach Scott Flemming has joined NBA India as Head of Basketball Operations. He will oversee the league’s youth and elite basketball development initiatives in India, including the Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA programme, The NBA Academy in India and NBA Basketball School, and will work with key stakeholders across the country to continue to grow basketball, according to an NBA Press release.
Flemming was previously the head coach of the Crusaders Basketball team at the Northwest Nazarene University. He has also served as head coach of the Indian men’s national team from November 2012 to May 2015 after spending two years as an assistant coach for the Texas Legends of the NBA G League, the NBA’s official minor league.
Flemming has 25 years of collegiate coaching experience, including 20 seasons as head coach and athletic director at his alma mater, Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio), where he won two National Coach of the Year awards and a Christian College National Championship.
“Scott Flemming is an exceptionally accomplished basketball coach, and his experience and knowledge of India’s basketball landscape will help drive all of our efforts to continue to grow the game among Indian boys and girls,” said NBA India Managing Director Yannick Colaco.
“Basketball in India is poised for significant growth, and the NBA has done a tremendous job increasing participation in the sport in India,” said Flemming. “I am thrilled to be back in India, a country that holds a special place in my heart, to help expand the NBA’s initiatives and the talent level across the country.”
The NBA Academy India, an elite basketball training center at Jaypee Greens Integrated Sports Complex for the top male and female prospects from across the country, has officially opened on 9 May. The NBA Academy India employs a holistic, 360-degree approach to player development with focuses on education, leadership, character development and life skills. As part of the program, the students compete against top competition throughout the year and have an opportunity to be selected for travel teams that play in international tournaments and exhibition games.
The NBA Academy India builds on the NBA’s existing basketball and youth development initiatives in India. The Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA program has reached more than 6 million youth and trained more than 5,000 physical education instructors nationwide since its launch in 2013. On April 7, the NBA launched NBA Basketball School, a network of tuition-based basketball development programs around the world, open to male and female players ages 6-18 from outside the U.S. The first NBA Basketball Schools launched in New Delhi and Mumbai as part of a multiyear agreement with India On Track (IOT), one of India’s leading sports management, marketing and development companies.
