NBA Draft 2020: The Detroit Pistons will acquire Trevor Ariza and the No. 16 pick in tonight’s draft in exchange for a future first-rounder, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.
The move gives Detroit a second first-round pick tonight while providing financial flexibility for a Rockets team that faces a hard cap.
In his first draft as Pistons GM, Troy Weaver will be picking at Nos. 7 and 16. His mandate has been to restore the franchise’s base of young talent and he will get a chance to impact that beginning with tonight’s draft.
Houston is trading Trevor Ariza and the No. 16 pick tonight to Detroit for a future first-round pick, sources tell ESPN. The deal gives the Rockets – a hard-capped team — the freedom to use their mid-level exception in free agency.

The picks that the Detroit Pistons are sending to the Rockets are heavily protected. It will be the top-16 protected for the next four years, top-10 protected the following two years, and then top-9 protected. After that, it becomes seconds.
This means that unless the Pistons make the playoffs in the next four years, they will not get the 1st round picks.
This would conserve about $5.8M in cap space for the Pistons. Instead of $15.5M in space, they could have about $21.3M in space.
Otherwise, Ariza gets fully guaranteed at $12.8M on each trade and DET ends up with their cap space cut in half from the $30M they had pre-trade.
