NBA Rumors: Why did Boston Celtics hire a 32-year old assistant coach for player development?

NBA Rumors: The 17x NBA winner Boston Celtics are looking to hire a new assistant coach. Evan Turner spent two seasons as a member of the Boston Celtics. Now, he is set to return to Boston to become an assistant coach.

Shams Charania reported that Turner is concluding a deal to become an assistant coach on Brad Stevens’ staff.

The Celtics lost Kara Lawson from their coaching staff last year after she left to become the head coach of the Duke women’s team.

NBA Rumors: Who is Evan Turner?

Turner, still just 32 years old. He was the No. 2 overall pick for the 76ers in the 2010 NBA draft. He might know a bit of player development, having just finished his playing career. Although this comes as a shock move from the Celtics, it looks like Turner could work really well with a young team of Jayson Tatum, who recently signed a max contract

He also spent three-plus seasons in Philadelphia before he was traded to the Indiana Pacers.

He signed with the Celtics prior to the 2014-15 season. He averaged 3.3 points, 2.0, assists, and 2.0 rebounds in the 2019-20 season. His career averages are 9.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. He shot the ball at 43.3% from inside the arc and 29.4% from outside.

After two years in Boston, he played three years in Portland before playing in 19 games last season for the Atlanta Hawks. He was traded to Minnesota in February but did not play for the Timberwolves.
