The Indian cricket team is set for a major rejig as current head coach Anil Kumble could elevated as the team director, while current India Under-19 coach Rahul Dravid will over the reigns of the national team, a report published in New Indian Express said.

It is being reported that the ongoing series against Australia will be Kumble’s last assignment as coach and he will take the new role as soon as April 14.

The BCCI Committee of Administrators (COA) met with coach Anil Kumble on the sidelines of the BCCI Awards in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The COA led by former CAG Vinod Rai had a detailed discussion with head coach Kumble and assistant coaches R Sridhar and Sanjay Bangar.

Kumble was asked to prepare a comprehensive report covering the the national team, women’s cricket as well as junior cricket.

The current regime wants a structural change in the BCCI and indications are that the board is planning a structure similar to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

“We need to move ahead with the times and that is why these structural changes are looked at. If it happens, Indian cricket will benefit, as one person will handle all the teams and there will be better coordination between all concerned. The plan is already in place and there is a strong possibility that when new contracts are given out, these changes will be made,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by the New Indian Express.

“It is too early to say whether Kumble will take up the role or not. Being the coach and team director (with new responsibility) is no easy thing as it needs a lot of dedicated time. The amount of cricket we play might burn him out. If he doesn’t, we need the back-up as we can’t let the team getting affected, particularly with the Champions Trophy coming up,” he said.

However, whether Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid will will be entrusted with new roles wil have to wait since CoA member Diana Edulji in report by India Today has dismissed rumours of Dravid taking over from Kumble as head coach.
