Maria Sharapava returns to the Grand Slam scene with the US Open next week. A black Swarovski crystal-studded Nike dress will be adding to the glam quotient when the Russian tennis beauty steps on to the court for his night matches.
The 30-year-old will be playing her first Grand Slam match after the15-month suspension for doping charges, to which she had always pleaded not guilty. The 149-ranked Sharapova has been awarded a wild card by the US Open organisers.
The 2006 US Open and four-time Grand Slam champion has shared a picture of the crystal-studded outfit on Instagram.
“What an amazing experience getting to work with icon @riccardotisci17 and @Nike on this years US Open dress. Just remembering sitting around my dining table talking inspiration and all things lace with Riccardo and now….voila!! it’s come to life!! thank you, Riccardo!!,” Sharapova has written.
Sharapova has also shared with Vogue magazine about her choice for the black dress. “It was always going to be black. It wasn’t even a question of what we were going to do for the night matches. I want to bring a sense of elegance to the feeling that I have when I walk onto the court. That’s what I felt with the 2006 dress (the year she had won the US Open Women’s singles crown) , and what I really wanted to relive in this dress is the moment of elegance and thinking of Audrey Hepburn and her classic Givenchy dress.”
The choice for black may also have a little sense of superstition. Sharapova had won the US Open 2006 six final in a black dress.
To complement the dress, a black bomber jacket is also tailored to Sharapova’s exact specifications. The complete dress will go on sale on August 26 in Nike stores. The dress is at $500 and the jacket will cost an additional $700.
