NZ vs Ban 1st T20: Milestone for Martin Guptill; set to become only 2nd Kiwi cricketer to play 100 T20Is- New Zealand’s destructive opening batsman Martin Guptill is all set to achieve a major landmark today when he takes the field for the first T20I against Bangladesh at Seddon Park, Hamilton. Guptill would become only the second Kiwi cricketer to play 100 T20 internationals. The other person to achieve this feat from this country is Ross Taylor.
A clean striker of the ball, Guptill has had an inconsistent career in Tests but has found greater success in limited-overs cricket. In his 99 T20Is so far, the 34-year-old has amassed 2839 runs at a very healthy average of 32.26. Guptill has also scored two T20I hundreds – one against South Africa in 2012 and the other against Australia in 2018.
Today at Seddon Park @Martyguptill is set to become just the second BLACKCAP after @RossLTaylor to play 100 T20Is. How devastating Martin Guptill can be is easily understood by looking at his T20I hundreds. His first one came off just 69 balls while his second was even more blistering, taking just 49 deliveries.
Apart from his pair of hundreds, Guptill managed 17 half-centuries. His great fielding is an added advantage to the team, across formats.
Guptill, at one time, held the record for most runs by any player in T20 internationals. Currently, he is at no. 3 position in the list, behind India’s Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Guptill’s T20I debut happened in 2009, against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground. His career in the shortest format started with a whimper as he was dismissed for a duck on his second delivery. But this was merely an early hiccup en route to a glorious career.
