The official car of the Indian Premier League 2019 – Tata Motors’ SUV Harrier – is scoring at a T20 pace on the sales and bookings pitch. The car has made headlines earlier this month with the news that Harrier will replace Nexon for in-stadia presence during the IPL 2019.
Developed on Land Rover’s D8 Discovery structure, the Tata Motors SUV has become an instant hit with the SUV lovers. According to Business Daily Economic Times, Harrier has rode its growing popularity to score over 10,000 bookings since mid-October last year. The vehicle has added a new set of buyers to Tata Motors passenger vehicles, the paper has quoted Tata Motors Managing Director Guenter Butschek as saying.
“We have more than 10,000 pending orders, which is extremely strong. Could we have done better, sure. I would have loved to. From my own expectations of delivering exceptional quality, we did not meet expectations, but we were good so far and improving every day. We are booked for the next four months and I think that is a good show,” Butschek is reported as saying.
IPL’s official car last year, Nexon with 62,000 units’ sale had already enabled Tata Motors secure a market share of over 8% in utility vehicle segment so far this fiscal. The market share of Tata Motors in utility vehicles has increased by 300 basis points over financial year 18. Tata Motors had driven out Maruti from the prime parking place during the IPL games last year.
The company has already dispatched over 2,000 Harriers on to the road since the launch in January. The diesel automatic is on the way and the one with the sunroof will also come.
There will be petrol post BS VI. The company is likely to plant a 1.6 litre petrol GDI on the Harrier post 2020, with eventual addition of hybrid system to meet CAFE norms of 2022.
