Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has announced an increased of Rs. 351 crore to the allocation for sports from the government.
Jaitley has apportioned the sports budget at Rs 1943 crore ($285.7 million) against Rs 1592 crore ($234.12 million) the year before. Indian athletes are preparing for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in 2018. The budget increase of nearly 40 per cent will come in handy for the training needs of athletes.
Sports Authority of India, which organises sports camps across the country, has been granted a total of Rs 481 crore, against Rs 416 crore it received last year.
The assistance to national sports federations has been increased to Rs 302 crore from Rs 185 crore. Importantly, the allocation for the scheme for the benefit of north eastern region has been revised to Rs 148.4 crore this year as compared to Rs 131.33 crore last year.
Most of the budget allocation for sport is used of supporting athletes across Olympic sports. Wrestling and boxing have been the richest in terms of medal hauls for Indian sports persons.
