Royal Challengers Bangalore’s opener Devdutt Padikkal is in form of his life and he continued his rich form in the IPL 2020 match against Delhi Capitals on Monday as he smashed a fifty off 41 balls to script a unique record.
Padikkal, who has scored five half-centuries in the IPL 2020 so far, has now become the batsman with most fifty or fifty-plus scores in a debut season.
With this milestone, the 20-year-old surpassed Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom had amassed four fifty-plus scores in their debut seasons. Dhawan was the first to script the record back in 2008 for Delhi Daredevils, while Iyer equalled the tally in 2015, playing for the same franchise.
Also, Chennai Super Kings opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made his IPL debut in the ongoing season, hit three fifties while playing just six games in IPL 2020 as his team bowed out of the tournament.
Interestingly, earlier in IPL 2020, Padikkal became the only player in IPL history to score three fifties in his first four games.
Notably, the RCB opener is currently third in the Orange Cap tally with 472 runs to his name.
Meanwhile, riding on Padikkal’s half-century, RCB set a 153-run target for DC in the match which is crucial for both the teams.
The winner of the game will confirm his berth in the playoffs, while the loser will have to be dependent on results and net run rate to make it to the knock-out stage of IPL 13.
