PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has reportedly announced a $2.5 million increase in the prize purse at the annual players meeting last week.

The Championship last year had a prize purse of $ 12.5 million and Rory McIlroy had pocketed $2.25 mn as the 2019 champion. Elsewhere last year, the U.S. Open had a $12.5 million purse, the Masters prize money was $11.5 million, the PGA Championship prize pool was $11 million and the Open Championship offered $10.75 million.

Since The Players Championship has announced an unprecedented prize purse, the other Tour events are also expected to make similar hikes.

The PGA Tour offers $15 million for the winner of the Tour Championship, but that is considered bonus money from its season points race.

But the purses for PGA Tour events are likely to keep increasing, especially after the tour wraps up its latest round of television negotiations.

The Player Championship has announced an eye catching announcement in the prize money for the third successive year. It was increased by $ 500,000 in 2018 and $ 1.5 million last year. There has been a total increase of $4.5 million or approximately 43% increase in the span of three seasons.

The Tour Championship winner still gets the highest cheque of $ 15 million, but that is a bonus accumulated across different championships during the season. The runners-up bags $ 5 million.
