Showtime Networks have been sued by a disgruntled fan for issues during the live streaming of Mayweather-McGregor on its Showtime PPV mobile app. The four-fight card in Las Vegas was sold for $99.99 through the traditional Showtime PPV broadcast as well as a cable television provider and live streaming on Showtime’s app, Sling TV and UFC.tv.
A customer in Portland, Oregon, named Zack Bartel has filed a lawsuit against Showtime Networks, Inc., alleging that thousands of fight fans across the country did not have clear access to view the fight despite paying the full advertised fee.
The fight was briefly delayed due to technical issues with PPV. The worldwide streaming also suffered. The boxing fans took to social media with reports of problem of delay and low-quality viewing experience.

UFC’s streaming service Fight Pass, owing to the technical difficulties, ultimately had to refer customers to alternate providers.

While the fight is now a history, Showtime network faces legal action that has been filed with an intention of converting it into a class action on behalf of all subscribers to the fight who were unable to watch it.
Bartel purchased the fight through the Showtime PPV app for live streaming the footage but, “to his extreme disappointment and frustration,” he saw only “grainy video, error screens, buffer events, and stalls” rather than the advertised quality of 1080p resolution high-definition video at 60 frames per second, according to a lawsuit filed in U.S. district court after the fight Saturday night.
The complaint also includes a screenshot demonstrating the poor quality of the video that Bartel saw. The seventh page of Bartel’s complaint is a screenshot of 18 tweets that all consist of consumers complaining about their problems using the Showtime app.
“Defendant knew and should have known its system wasn’t able to conform to the qualify defendant promised its customers, based on defendant’s available bandwidth and subscriber numbers,” the complaint says. “Instead of being upfront with consumers about its new, untested, underpowered service, defendant caused likelihood of confusion and misunderstanding as to the source and quality of the HD video consumers would see on fight night.”
As per Variety report, a Showtime representative has said that it would issue a full refund to any customers who paid for the PPV event through its direct-to-consumer services, if Showtime is able to confirm they were unable to watch the live stream.
