Both Manchester United and Manchester City will leapfrog the reigning champions if they win their games in hand.
The Saints got off to an excellent start as their striker Danny Ings gave them the lead 2 minutes into the match.
Liverpool kept knocking on Southampton’s door but their defense had all the answers and managed a clean sheet.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side, for whom this was a second league loss of the season, remain top of the table on goal difference but have taken only two points from the past nine available.
Liverpool is now level at points (33) with Manchester United at the top of the table, having played a game more than the Red Devils. Southampton climbs to the 6th spot 29 points from 17 matches.
Southampton’s first win in five Premier League games sees them climb to sixth.
Liverpool now travel to Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday before returning to league action on 17 January, when they host Manchester United.
