Premier League: Newcastle – Aston Villa game postponed after multiple Covid-19 positives

Newcastle vs Aston Villa postponed: Premier League fixture between Newcastle United and their rivals Aston Villa has been delayed due to a “large increase” in Covid-19 cases at the Magpies’ training ground.

Various Newcastle players and staff members are self-isolating at home after declaring positive test results. The club’s training ground at Darsley Park was also closed to limit any further spread of the virus.

Newcastle has lodged a petition with the Premier League to postpone the fixture at Villa Park, which has been confirmed.

A new date and time for the game will be confirmed in the future.

Aston Villa said that it “fully supports” the Premier League’s judgment to delay the match.

Everybody at Aston Villa wishes a speedy recovery to all those affected by the virus,” added the club.

The Newcastle players and staff will be tested again this week. There will also be a meeting  of the club with the league and Public Health England’s local authority to decide the furthe course of action.

The club also stated that they will not name the individuals who have tested positive for Covid-19.
