Qatar Open 2021: Roger Federer suffers shock defeat
Qatar Open 2021 – Roger Federer shock defeat: Little-known tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili caused a massive upset on Thursday as he knocked out world No. 5 Roger Federer from the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open 2021 in Doha.

Second-seeded Federer went down fighting 6-3, 1-6, 5-7 against Georgian Basilashvili in the last-8 of the men’s singles competition.

The 39-year-old Federer was attempting to reach his seventh Doha semi-final. The second seed was making his first tournament appearance since the 2020 Australian Open.

Roger Federer shock defeat: Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, had not played a competitive match for 405 days before coming into this tournament as he underwent two knee surgeries in 2020.

Federer made a winning return after 14 months, defeating British number one Daniel Evans in 3 sets in the round of 16 on Wednesday but couldn’t quite match up to Basilashvili’s level in the next round.

Basilashvili saved seven of 10 break points, including a match point at 4-5 in the decider, to clinch victory over a tiring Federer after one hour and 50 minutes.

“It’s unbelievable, he’s one of the greatest of all time. Just playing him means so much to me.

“I’m very happy he’s back playing again. To win against him is a dream come true, he was always my idol. He’s an unbelievable player,” Basilashvili said.

The world No. 42 will now face Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals. The American outlasted fourth seed Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 to reach his first semi-final of 2021.
