Rome Rankings Series: Vinesh Phogat continues her golden run, reclaims World No. 1 rank with gold at Matteo Pellicone

Rome Rankings Series – Vinesh Phogat wins Gold: Vinesh Phogat continued her golden return to wrestling after she defeated Canada’s Diana Weicker 4-0 to win gold medal at Matteo Pellicone Rome Rankings on Saturday. This is her second title win in less than two weeks. With this, she reclaimed the world number spot.

Phogat entered the Matteo Pellicone final in a dominant fashion, confirming a medal for India in 53kg women wrestling. The 26-year-old defeated Samantha Leigh Stewart (CAN) by fall to confirm a podium finish.

She started her Rome Rankings Series with a thumping win over teammate Nandini Bajirao Salokhe in the opening bout of the 53kg women’s division. The Haryana-born dominated the entire match and sealed the victory in just 45 seconds. In the second match, she got a walkover against Tatyana Akhmetova Amanzhol (KAZ), after the latter pulled out due to injury.

In round three, she again registered a victory by fall, this time against Luisa Elizabeth Valverde Melendres (ECU).

Nandini Bajirao Salokhe, meanwhile, lost to Samantha in the bronze medal match.
