RR vs PBKS in IPL 2021 – Chris Morris vs Jhye Richardson: The Monday clash will be more than just Rajasthan Royals vs Punjab Kings campaign opener. It is a battle between two ‘Million Dollar Babies’ trying to justify their whopping price tag. While Rajasthan is in possession of the costliest player in IPL history in Chris Morris, Punjab boast the third-most-expensive player of the season in Jhye Richardson. All eyes will be at the Wankhede Stadium in match 4 as the duo take the field to help their respective side get off to a flying start.

RR vs PBKS in IPL 2021: How is Chris Morris important to Rajasthan Royals

Bought for INR 16.25 crore in February at the auctions, Morris will have big shoes of Jofra Archer to fill. Archer was ruled out of the initial stage of IPL after he underwent surgery earlier this month. In his absence, Morris will lead RR’s pace attack.

Interestingly, he is unfazed by the big responsibility as he has been in such situations before with other franchises. “Every single team that I have played in the IPL, my role has been with the new ball and at the death. That doesn’t really change. I have always had fast bowlers in the team and I’ve been there supporting act,” Morris had said at a virtual press conference.

It won’t be a new role if I am leading an attack, won’t be new if I am supporting. There is a little bit of responsibility when it comes to leading the attack. But like I said since it wouldn’t be able to be alien to me,” he added.

Morris has played for three franchises before; Chennai Super Kings (2013), Delhi Capitals (2016-19) and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has also been part of the Rajasthan squad in 2015.

Talking about the pressure that comes with such an expensive price tag, Morris said “I think it’s natural to have a little bit of pressure when something like that has happened. I’d be lying to you if there wasn’t any pressure but fortunately enough in the past, I have been coming in with quite a big price tag on my head. At the end of the day, you need to perform, no matter what the price tag is.” Morris added.

RR vs PBKS in IPL 2021: Jhye Richardson to make IPL debut

Richardson was picked for a rollicking ₹14 crore by PBKS after he finished as the leading wicket-taker in the Big Bash League. Although still a work in progress 24-year-old packs immense talent. His biggest asset is his cool demeanour during crunch situations, something he will be continuously put in during IPL 2021. If nurtured well he could become a key player for Punjab.

Along with pace spearhead Mohammad Shami, the lanky Australian is expected to put an end to the team’s death bowling problem this season. And interestingly, he plans to do this with a smile.

The key to my game is to just go out and have fun. It’s easier said than done because you’re bowing to the best in the world but for me, if I can just stand at the top of my mark, and smile, that is a big one for me,” he told PTI.

I actually started doing that (smile) during the Big Bash at the top of my mark, just to put a smile on the top, just to remind myself every ball that T20 is fun.

The pressure of a huge price tag is bound to be there but some advice from head coach Anil Kumble has helped him settle his nerves.

I started putting pressure on myself (thinking about the price tag). But, I had a good conversation with Anil yesterday, and he said, you know, ‘we didn’t pick you up for the price tag we just picked you up for your services and what you do on the cricket field’. For me that was really important to hear, to know that the coach has picked me up for a reason and knows what I’m capable of,” Richardson said.

So for me, now it’s not to worry about the price tag. I know all that coach wants from me is to perform my best and back myself with whatever skill that may be, whether it’s opening the bowling or trying to hit some runs in the lower order.
