As Pro Kabaddi League initiate the proceedings for a new season with the player draft in Mumbai next week, a rival league is all set to shape up in New Delhi.
Plans and details of the new league will be announced in the Capital next week. Former India opener Virender Sehwag has been roped in as the face of the proposed kabaddi league, to be backed by sports broadcaster DSport.
The Indo International Premier Kabaddi League was launched by much fanfare in August last year jointly by the New Kabaddi Federation of India (NKFI) and DSport.
The New Kabaddi Federation of India is formed by a group of the sport administrators and kabaddi players who have been behind “freeing the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India from the clutches of” the body’s life president Janardhan Singh Gehlot and his wife Mridula Bhadauria, who had been placed as the AKFI president.
The Delhi High Court had ordered the exit of the husband-wife duo from the AKFI and appointed an administrator to run the affairs of the body till the time of fresh elections.
The New Kabaddi Federation of India, behind the rival kabaddi league, claim to have been recognised by the World Kabaddi Federation.
As the rivals will be up against Star Sports / Mashal Sports-owned high profile and well established league, the new league will be launched with much fanfare. Sehwag insidesport.co has reliably learnt will be present at the launch of the league.
The league is tipped to showcase a distinct format, having 8 teams with 62 matches spread over one and half month. Each team will have 3-4 foreign players from across the world. It will feature players from New Zealand, Poland, Argentina, Tanzania, Australia, Norway, United Kingdom, Canada and USA, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Mauritius, Kenya, Iraq, Denmark and other nations from across the globe.
