Serena narrates women power in ‘Dream Crazier’ Nike commercial

“If they (men) want to call you (women) crazy, fine. Show them what crazy can do”. That is the strong message from Serena Williams – on of the craziest and most impactful female athletes – all fellow sportspersons and women as the 23-time Grand Slam champion lends her voice to a Nike commercial – ‘Dream Crazier’.

So impactful is the Nike’s TVC, to be played in the breaks during the Academy Awards, that NBC News political analyst Elise Jordan has tweeted that the ad too deserves an Oscar.

Serena Williams was on the stage to present A Star Is Born during the ceremony. She’ll also be featured in a new Nike ad, “Dream Crazier,” that also includes gymnast Simone Biles, fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, the US women’s national football team, with a host of other women athletes.

“If we show emotion, we’re called dramatic. If we want to play against men, we’re nuts. And if we dream of equal opportunity, we’re delusional. When we stand for something, we’re unhinged. When we’re too good, there’s something wrong with us. And if we get angry, we’re hysterical, irrational, or just being crazy,” narrates the Serena voice over in the powerful ad.

“But a woman running a marathon was crazy. A woman boxing was crazy. A woman dunking, crazy. Coaching an NBA team, crazy. A woman competing in a hijab; changing her sport; landing a double-cork 1080; or winning 23 grand slams, having a baby, and then coming back for more, crazy, crazy, crazy, and crazy.

Serena’s life, journey, achievements and experiences make her the best person to narrate “girl-power” script with all the real emotions. The tennis ace has been subjected to racist and gendered criticism. She was punished for snapping at an umpire during a match, even as male players have gotten away with similar behaviour.

But she remained a big a crusader off the court, as she has been on it. Taking pride in what she stands for, Saina has shared the Nike ad on her twitter handle.

The ad is part of a new marketing strategy of the American sports, athleisure wear and foot wear brand. The 1:30 minute add will air on television during tonight’s broadcast of the 91st Academy Awards.

Serena will also present the nominees for the Best Picture category along with a slew of other well-known celebrities.

The Academy had announced on Thursday that Chef José Andrés, Dana Carvey, Queen Latifah, Congressman John Lewis, Diego Luna, Tom Morello, Mike Myers, Trevor Noah, Amandla Stenberg and Barbra Streisand were invited to “introduce and share their reflections on the Best Picture-nominated movies”.

Serena will reportedly be involved in a segment honouring the star-studded cast of A Star Is Born.
