After much controversies around the appointment of new coach, Ravi Shastri, the former cricket director of the Indian national cricket team, has been named the Head Coach for the team. While Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the bowling coach for the Indian cricket team.
Shastri has associated with the team for the third time. He was among the five applicants interviewed by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Monday, and he beat the likes of former India batsman Virender Sehwag and ex-Australian cricketer Tom Moody to the coveted post.
On the other hand, Rahul Dravid, who was recently appointed as the India-A and India U-19 head coach will also be handled the task of being the batting coach for the senior team. However, his appointment will only be for the foreign tours.
Having interviewed five candidates on Monday, the Cricket Advisory Committee — comprising of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman — had made it clear that the name will be announced after India skipper Virat Kohli’s return from America. But the SC-appointed Committee of Administrators stood ground and ensured that the announcement took place on Tuesday itself.
The media went rumbling around the Tuesday evening, when it was announced that Ravi Shastri has been appointed as head coach. But soon after, BCCI rejected the rumours and BCCI joint-secretary Amitabh Choudhary said that the decision on who would become India’s next coach is yet to be confirmed to the board by the three-member Cricket Advisory Committee.
