Cricket has propelled Sony Six to the No. 1 position in sports genre, even as Pro Kabaddi League continues to be the most watched among sports programmes in India for the sixth consecutive week.
Star Sports First, India’s only private sector free to air sports channel, after being at the top for five successive weeks ever since its launch last month is relegated to the second spot. Cricket propelled Sony Six to the top position in the week 35 BARC ratings, which are derived from broadcast data between August 26 and September 1, 2017.
Sony Six and Sony Ten 3 made significant gains to move up in the top five list for week 35, which also features Sony Ten 1, whereas Star Sports First and Star Sports 1 Hindi lost out considerable numbers in viewership data to Sony.
Sony Six, riding on excitement around Virat Kohli-led Indian team’s total domination over hosts Sri Lanka, registered 16.675 crore impressions – a gain of 2.125 crore impressions when compared to week 34.
These numbers were good enough to end newcomer Star Sports First’s five-week reign at the top. Star’s free to air channel, which has been making significant gain from kabaddi’s strong base among rural masses, registered a decline of around 2.35 crore impressions from last week. The loss relegated the channel to the second position. Whereas Sony Six and Sony Ten 3 made good gains to strengthen their respective positions in the top five sports genre list, Star Sports 1 Hindi too lost out precious impressions even as it managed to stay among the top five.
However, kabaddi continues to rule the sporting sphere in the country. In a week when India had outplayed Sri Lanka in two one-day internationals, kabaddi emerges at the top position in the most watched sports programmes list. Other than the third and the fourth one-day internationals in Sri Lanka, the other three top five sports shows on BARC list are the Pro Kabaddi League matches.
|Rank||Channel Name||Programme||Impressions (000s)|
|1||STAR Sports First||L/T VIVO PKL S5 M56 KOL-BEW/PAT||4303|
|2||Sony SIX||L/T MICROMAX CUP-17 3 ODI SL/IND||4229|
|3||STAR Sports First||L/T VIVO PKL S5 M48 MUM-MUM/PNE||4127|
|4||STAR Sports First||L/T VIVO PKL S5 M47 MUM-PAT/TAM||3968|
|5||Sony SIX||L/T MICROMAX CUP-17 4 ODI SL/IND||3710|
Kabaddi, however, gets an advantage over cricket. Star Sports First being a free to air channel enjoys much better reach than Sony networks paid channels, which have been showing cricket.
