UEFA, the governing body of football in Europe, has announced the renewal of one of its longest-running sponsorship deals with Sony PlayStation.

The extension of the agreement with Sony Computers Entertainment, that began in 1997, will now cover the next three seasons from 2018-19 to 2020-21 where it will serve as the official sponsor of UEFA Champions League. The deal also includes rights for the Super Cup, Youth League and Futsal Champions League.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Sony-owned popular gaming console brand will work with UEFA to deliver “exciting content and competitions to fans across the PlayStation network and digital-media channels”, with a focus on virtual reality innovations and the opportunity to play in a video game competition on the pitch the day after the Champions League final.

PlayStation will also launch new versions of the UEFA Champions League Fantasy and Predictor games, alongside the official UEFA Champions League app.

Guy-Laurent Epstein, marketing director of UEFA Events, said, “Our long-term partnerships with experienced industry leaders such as PlayStation are invaluable to Uefa in promoting our competitions globally, and in particular in the digital space, so we are looking forward to continuing our relationship as we enter a new Uefa Champions League cycle.”

Sony PlayStation will now join the roster of seven other brands who have committed their support for the next three-year cycle of UEFA Champions League. This includes Heineken, Nissan, PepsiCo, Mastercard, Gazprom, Adidas and Santander. Adidas extended its contract last week while the Spanish banking group Santander is the newest sponsor among all.

This season’s Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid will take place tomorrow (May 27) at 12:15 am IST.
