Star Sports’ expansion plans in India include two more regional channels this year. There will be several more on the cards later. Star Sports is all set to strengthen its regional bouquet with two more channels – Star Sports 1 Kannada and Star Sports 1 Telugu.
The addition to the Star Sports 1 Hindi and Star Sports 1 Tamil is slated by the end of the year. The announcement is made as Star India has published the list of maximum retail price for individual channels and different bouquets of channels.
Star India MD has earlier gone on record saying that regional content will be the key driver in Star’s India business strategy. The launch of Star Sports 1 Tamil was the first major step in that direction. Star Sport in March had successfully experimented with the Indian Premier League broadcast in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali languages even as it did not have any dedicated regional sports channel then.
Following the grand success of Star Sports 1 Tamil, Star Sports 1 Kannada and Star Sports 1 Telugu will be Star’s first major expansion in regional sports market.
Already the largest regional sports channel network in India, Star is also contemplating the launch of sports channels in Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam.
The regional language broadcast experiment for the Indian Premier League had paid good dividends to the biggest sports network. According to Broadcast Audience Research Council data, the regional content had contributed 22% of the total 1.4 billion IPL audience this year.
