Star Sports First continues to be the No. 1 sports channel in the country and kabaddi stays the most watched sport in direct competition with India’s exciting win over Sri Lanka in the first one-day international at Dambulla.
Live cricket though has propelled Sony Ten 1 to the second position and enabled and Sony Six consolidate at No. 3 in the top five sports genre list. The first one-day international of the five-match India-Sri Lanka series has helped Sony Ten 3 to break into the top five list for the week.
Star Sports First being the only free to air private channel contributes significantly to stay it ahead in the race. Sony’s sports network is a bouquet of paid channels, which do not enjoy the kind of reach SSF has. Thus, BARC data will not provide a fair comparison between popularity of cricket and kabaddi. Cricket is also watched by a large number of fans on state broadcaster’s free to air Doordarashan Sports. Incidentally, BARC data does not register DD viewership numbers.
Cricket though has enabled Sony Ten 1 to jump two slots to No. 2 in the top five sports broadcasters list. A notch below is Sony Six, static at number three. What is more important that both the channels have rode the cricket wave to make over 90% gain in impressions. Sony Ten 1, which had a mere 75,869 thousand impressions at No. 4 in the fourth week, is placed second with 145,496 thousand impressions. Sony Six stays at No. 3 with impressions progressing from 77,534 thousand to 144,421 thousand. For the leader Star Sports First, impressions have declined from 209,168 thousand to 172,652 thousand.
Sony Ten 3 made the best gains on the back of India Sri Lanka series to barge into the top five list with 100,032 impressions.
