Hima Das will return to her hometown Guwahati today (Friday) to a grand State reception. Assam Chief Minister and the former Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will himself lead the reception party for the State’s newly-found sports sensation.
A red carpet with the athletics track look has been rolled out at the Guwahati airport in honour of Hima Das, who will be reaching the State for the first time after her 2018 Asian Games heroics in Jakarta.
The State Chief Minister will himself welcome Hima at the airport, from where she will be taken to the Sarusujai Stadium for a grand public reception. On way to the stadium, Hima will also pay homage at the memorial of legendary Assamese singer Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
Hima will be having a busy day full of celebrations, culminating with the State honour at a felicitation function at the Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra in the evening.
The teenaged athlete has hit headlines earlier this year for her 400-metre gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Championship – first ever for an Indian at an IAAF meet.
Asian Games have been a perfect icing on the cake with the 4×400 metre women’s relay gold, 4×400 metre mixed team silver and the 400-metre silver with a national record of 50.70. She was unfortunate to miss another possible medal in the 200 metre, where she was disqualified for a faulty start in the final race.
Hima ever since her arrival in Delhi on Tuesday has been busy attending functions to celebrate her success. The events included felicitation form Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Next in the line will be a windfall from brands, which have already lined-up their marketing heads for negotiations with one of the most promising Indian athletes.
