SuperSport has acquired the rights to the Laver Cup, tennis’ version of the popular Ryder Cup.
The recently launched competition is in honour of 11-time major champion Rod Laver and pits the six top-ranked European players against their counterparts from the rest of the world.
Just like the Ryder Cup, each team will be led by a captain who is a legend of the sport. For the first three years, Björn Borg will captain Europe and John McEnroe will lead the World team.
“This is the start of something big with the potential of reaching the heights of the Ryder Cup, as one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events,” said Gideon Khobane, CEO of SuperSport. “It’s imperative that the World of Champions and our viewers are a part of the growth of this fantastic event.”
The inaugural edition is scheduled for September 22-24 at the O2 Arena in Prague. The following year, it moves to the United States.
