T20 World Cup – Ashwin for World Cup Squad? Former Team India spinner turned commentator Laxman Sivaramakrishnan believes the team management should consider Ravichandran Ashwin for the T20 World Cup squad if he has a good IPL 2021. Ashwin, a regular in the longest format of the game, hasn’t featured for Team India in limited-overs since 2017, with Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal being preferred over him. However, with both leg-spinners suffering a dip in form, calls for Ashwin to return to the fold have grown with Sivaramakrishnan backing the Delhi Capitals star.

T20 World Cup – India Squad: ‘Ashwin should be considered if he has a good IPL 2021’ says L Sivaramakrishnan

Ashwin for World Cup Squad? Speaking in a media interaction arranged by Sony Sports Network ahead of India’s limited-overs series with Sri Lanka,  Laxman Sivaramakrishnan opined that India need to consider Ravichandran Ashwin for the T20 World Cup if he has a good IPL 2021 with the Delhi Capitals. Ashwin over the years has added a lot of variety to his bowling in a bid to make it suitable with the rigours of limited-overs cricket.

He said, “Yes, he (Ravichandran Ashwin) is one of the outstanding bowlers we’ve had in the last few years. His experience will definitely help. He bowls very well to left-handers. He’s not a slouch on the field, he can field reasonably well and is a safe catcher. He has worked hard on his fielding and fitness. He should be considered in my opinion”

Ashwin for World Cup Squad? A good IPl 2021 should propel Ashwin into the team management’s thoughts for the T20 World Cup, especially considering the drop in form of both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. While Rahul Chahar and Varun Chakravarthy have emerged as alternatives, their relative lack of experience at the international level could work in favour of Ashwin – and Siva has more interesting logic behind backing Ashwin for T20 World Cup.

If there are a lot of left-handers in the opposition, you want your best off-spinner to be bowling to them. If Ashwin has a good IPL in the UAE, he should be considered. If he works hard and has a good IPL, he can have a good chance of a comeback.”

So having a good IPL 2021 should be Ashwin’s mantra for now.
