The India men’s hockey team defeated Spain 3-0 in their third Group A game in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics here at the Oi Hockey Stadium South Pitch on Tuesday.

This result comes two days after the team was subjected to a 1-7 thrashing at the hands of Australia on Sunday. In the first quarter, India took the lead as Simranjeet Singh scored the goal and the early nerves for the Manpreet Singh-led side eased a bit. Soon after Rupinder Pal Singh scored as well, giving India a 2-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

No goals were scored in the second and third quarters, and India held on to the 2-0 lead. However, Spain was looking good while making attacking moves, and India had a tough task in holding them off.

In the fourth quarter, Rupinder scored one more goal as he successfully converted from a penalty corner, and hence India gained a 3-0 lead. In the end, India managed to hold on and walked away with a victory.

Before the match against Spain, India had defeated New Zealand but lost to Australia.

Tokyo Olympics Hockey LIVE – India vs Spain LIVE: World’s No. 1 ranked Australian team played like No. 1 to hand India one of the worst defeats for the Indian Hockey team in recent times. Indian defense was completely exposed by the Australian attackers as they scored goals at will against the helpless Indian team.  Australia defeated India 7-1 with Dilpreet Singh scoring the only goal of the match.

Indian men’s Hockey team captain Manpreet Singh feels the upcoming match against Spain in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics will be “challenging” but the side is ready for the game.

Following a 1-7 loss against World No. 1 Australia, the Indian Men’s Hockey team will look to bounce back from the result when they take on Spain in their third match of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 at OI Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.

“As I said earlier, we are taking one match at a time, and we need to keep improving every day on a platform like this,” Manpreet said in a Hockey India release on the eve of the match against Spain.

“Spain are also a very good team, and definitely, it’s going to be a challenging match for us, but we are up for it. All we have to do is to keep things simple and play to our strengths,” he added.

INDIA vs SPAIN Head to Head: India had last met Spain in September 2019 where they thrashed their rival 5-1 to complete a 100% record in overall head-to-head matches. It was their third consecutive win over Spain. Thus, it is a good opportunity for India to make a comeback. The stats are likely to give them the confidence that they can bounce back for humiliation against Australia.
