Tokyo Olympics: Odisha Government felicitates Men’s and women’s hockey teams – Follow LIVE Updates – The government of Odisha will be felicitating the men’s and women’s hockey teams after they created history at the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics. The Odisha government had signed a ₹100 crore deal with Hockey India in 2018 to sponsor both the teams for the next five years and reaped the rewards after both teams made it to the semi-finals at the Summer Games. The men’s team won a bronze, 41 years after it won a medal in the Moscow Olympics, while the women’s hockey team reached the semi-final for the first time.
The men’s and women’s hockey teams were in Delhi on Monday where they caught up with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for breakfast at his official residence. The teams landed in Bhubaneshwar on Tuesday and were given a grand roadshow before being escorted to a hotel in the state capital where they will stay for two days and felicitated. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is likely to announce cash rewards for the players during the felicitation ceremony in Kalinga Stadium for their performance at the Tokyo Olympics
Patnaik felicitated four men and women hockey players of the state and gave them cash awards. He gave cheques of ₹2.5 crores each to Indian men’s hockey team vice-captain Birendra Lakra and defender Amit Rohidas and ₹50 lakh each to Deep Grace Ekka and Namita Toppo of the women’s team.
