All the hype and frenzy around the FIFA Under-17 World Cup opener between India and the USA has failed to convert into a grand television viewership. The match viewership data in the Broadcast Audience Research Corporation television sports genre ratings figures far below cricket and kabaddi.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present at the venue. The media coverage in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup opening tie between hosts India and the USA was unprecedented for a non-cricket event in India. Still, the collective viewership across five channels, including DD Sports, broadcasting India’s debut game in a FIFA World Cup event has been lesser than any of the top five live programmes on a single channel.

The FIFA U-17 World Cup opener for India registered an aggregate 34,64,000 impressions across five channels – DD Sports, Sony Ten 2, Sony Ten 2 HD, Sony Ten 3 and Sony Ten 3 HD. Even this collective figure is several notches below the No. 5 sports genre programme for the week. Vivo Pro Kabaddi League tie between Mumbai and Haryana match on Star Sports First is at No. 5 position with 36,69,000 impressions.

Meanwhile, Cricket continues to dominate the BARC charts for sports genre for week 40 (September 30 – October 6).

The first three shows in the list are Hindi, English live broadcast and the Hindi post-match show during the fifth and final one-day international tie between India and Australia. Vivo Pro Kabaddi League’s Jaipur-Gujarat and Haryana-Mumbai get the other two positions in that order.

Among the top five sports channels, Star Sport First has moved up to the No. 2 position behind Star Sports 1 Hindi. Start Sports 1, which broadcast the English programming for the fifth ODI, is placed third. Star Sports First has primarily gained as there only one major cricket programming to challenge its week-long kabaddi broadcast.

Sony was expected to make big gains from the FIFA World Cup, but it could not get desired results from the all-important India-USA colts World Cup tie. Sony Ten 2 and Sony Ten 3 broadcasting the Word Cup live along with DD Sports have been able to break into the top sports broadcasters for the week. Sony Ten 1 represents the network in No. 4 position.
