It took a while for the deadlock to be broken but it was Chelsea’s latest signing Romelu Lukaku who scored an amazing header to score the only goal of the match in the 68th minute. A delightful cross from captain Cesar Azpilicueta was exactly what Lukaku wanted as he made space and placed the ball in the net to score his 1st Chelsea Champions League goal.

Champions League holders Chelsea got their new campaign off to a winning start as they beat Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday in recognition of Romelu Lukaku’s goal.

Thomas Tuchel’s side fought to tear down the Russian champions in their first Champions League match. Zenit produced the initial significant chance on 38 minutes as Rakitskyi curled his shot right at the Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy while Lukaku connected a header over the bar.

However, Chelsea improved after halftime and produced three sharp chances with Hakim Ziyech, Lukaku, and Antonio Rudiger all coming close to score.

The deadlock was broke in the 69th minute when Lukaku rose to head home from a Cesar Azpilicueta cross.

Artem Dzyuba almost equalized on 80 minutes as he slid in but couldn’t get enough contact on Sardar Azmoun’s cross. Mendy temporarily required treatment following the collision.
