UEFA Champions League final: Financial strength of two finalists

UEFA Champions League final: Financial strength of two finalists - InsideSport

The record 12-time UEFA Champions League title holders Real Madrid are all set for the finals against premier league side Liverpool on May 27 at 12:15 am IST in Kiev, Ukraine, for Europe’s most coveted football crown.

European football, with no cap on clubs spending to build their sides, is as much driven by clubs’ financial muscle as the team’s eventual display on the field.

For five-time champion Liverpool, the tie against Sergio Ramos-led squad will be their eighth Champions League final. The Premier League club will face the most decorated club in the Champions League history. Rampaging Real have three of the last four titles to their name.

There are mixed predictions for the outcome as some of the football pundits also see Liverpool with a chance to take home their six Champions League title. Cristiano Ronaldo is the top goal scorer of the tournament with 15 goals, four more than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. However, the English side is sailing ahead with 40 Champions League goals, 10 more than Real Madrid.

Ever wondered how do these two finalists compare off the field??

Net Worth and Value

According to the latest Forbes list of most valuable football teams around the world, Real Madrid is placed third behind Manchester United and Barcelona with $3.58 billion value. It was relegated from the top spot last year with a value depreciation of $65 million.

Liverpool, on the other hand, holds the eight spot in the list of most valuable football clubs around the world with $1.49 billion value. The value dropped 4% from 2016 with no change in ranking. The value of Real Madrid stands at a staggering 140 % of Liverpool.

Revenue

Real Madrid is second only behind Manchester United in Deloitte Football Money League 2018 rankings with $806.8 million revenue whereas Liverpool stands at ninth spot with $507.6 million in revenues earned last year. According to the Forbes List of Most Valuable Football Team, as of 1st June 2017, Real Madrid is placed at third spot with $688 million in revenues ahead of Liverpool at eight spot with $523 million.

Player and Squad Value

According to CIES Football Observatory, The 25-year old Salah’s transfer market value has reached $200.6 million after a spectacular performance graph this season. This makes him the most valuable player among the champions league 2018 finalists. Ronaldo’s value in the market, on the other hand, is around $127.4 million which takes into account his greater age (33).

It is, however, interesting to note that the squad value of Liverpool ($1022 million) is greater than Real Madrid ($869 million). The value of the Liverpool and Real squads is based on the 18 players selected for their respective semi-final second legs this week.
