Upcoming Sporting Events You Won’t Want to Miss
Live sports returned in a big way in 2021. Thus far this year we have witnessed some incredible events all around the globe. We watched history being made as Italy took the UEFA Euro championship, and the Tokyo Olympics brought us incredible competitions through countless events. With only half of the year over, we have plenty more to look forward to this year as well. For avid sports fans that love a variety of different contests, here are some of the best sporting events to watch for the rest of the year.
Big 10 Conference Championship: December 4th
Football fans are a passionate bunch. In the US, football is tightly tied in with the cities and communities that the teams represent. In fact, many football fans enjoy the college level more than the professional level precisely because the teams are closer to home. With the college football season getting started at the end of this month, it’s time to look ahead to the major championships on the horizon like the Big 10 Conference Championship scheduled for December 4th.
For some college fans, the teams represented in the Big 10 are the end-all-be-all of the sport. Names like the Michigan Wolverines and Iowa Hawkeyes are some of the most feared and respected teams that continuously produce results. Of course, you can always expect the Ohio Buckeyes to be a top contender as well and they currently have the best odds to win at around -230. If you are a college football fan, the Big 10 Conference Championship is the best sporting event of the year.
UFC 266: September 25th
The UFC seems to be on a continuous quest to outdo themselves with bigger and better MMA events. This September the UFC has quite the evening scheduled and any fans of the sport simply must tune in for it. The main event for the night is a championship bout featuring the 145lbs champion Alexander Volkanovski facing off against Brian Ortega. These two fighters have spent weeks as the two guest coaches of the popular reality show The Ultimate Fighter and fans know that some of the best fights in UFC history have come after weeks of buildup between coaches.
Before we see these two face off, we have some exciting matches to get through earlier in the night. The heavyweight contest between sluggers Curtis Blaydes and Jairzinho Rozenstruik is sure to be intense. We will also see the long awaited return of legendary UFC fighter Nick Diaz in the rematch against Robbie Lawler that is 17 years in the making. The co-main event will feature Russian striker Valentina Shevchenko defending her title against Lauren Murphy.
MLB World Series: October 26th – November 3rd
This fall the MLB World Series will return and the postseason buildup this year is sure to be one of the most competitive in recent memory. While we cannot say for certain who will be in the final series, we can take a guess which teams will make it to the postseason. In many ways this is one of the biggest years we’ve witnessed for MLB in a long time. Incredibly exciting players like Fernando Tatís Jr., Shohei Ohtani, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. are spurring an increased interest in the sport, especially among the younger generation.
With the MLB season winding down to the final weeks, we have a good idea of which teams have the best chance of winning it all. The Tampa Bay Rays have been exceptional, as have the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago White Sox. There are also teams that are fighting tooth and nail to claim their Wild Card spot like the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox. With all of this excitement building up, you can be assured that this year’s World Series is going to be exceptionally good.
Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder III: October 9th
The Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder feud is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic in boxing history. These two heavyweights have given everything they have in their bouts against each other and boxing fans have been privileged to watch. Now we are headed into their trilogy fight and it’s anyone’s guess what these two athletes will bring to the ring this time.
For a boxing trilogy fight, this one is particularly unusual. Their first meeting in 2018 ended in a draw, and the rematch ended in a KO victory for Fury. Wilder then activated the rematch clause in his contract and the 3rd fight is now scheduled for this October. Interestingly enough, this sets things up for a possible 4th fight between these two if Wilder was to win. There’s no telling what will happen but history will be made this October.
WWE Extreme Rules: September 26th
The WWE has never stopped devising ways to create over-the-top events for professional wrestling fans. This September, the WWE Extreme Rules series makes a comeback and this time it’s taking place in Columbus, Ohio. Fans love to speculate on what matchups we may see and they certainly never disappoint. At WWE Extreme Rules we may see a Women’s Championship Match between Bianca Belair and Alexa Bliss or even an event with WWE Champion Bobby Lashley. Stay tuned to find out the details after they are revealed next month.
NFL Super Bowl: February 13, 2022
The NFL Super Bowl is the single greatest event in the sport of football and the most important for most American sports fans. While the college level has countless bowls between teams and debates over which team can claim to be the best, the Super Bowl is decisive. Among all 32 NFL teams, the two best of the year will face off for their place in the NFL history books.
Of course, preseason has only just begun and we are a long way out from knowing which two teams will make it to the Super Bowl. However, we can at least comment on the favorites. The Kansas City Chiefs led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is an immensely talented team that is looking for their 2nd Super Bowl victory and 3rd appearance in 3 years. The Green Bay Packers led by Aaron Rodgers is another team that will do everything they can to win a championship this season. Regardless of what team you cheer for, the Super Bowl is a fantastic sporting event to watch.
