US Open 2021 Finals: Rajeev Ram & Joe Salisbury clinch men’s doubles title-  Down a set in Friday’s US Open men’s doubles championship, No. 4 seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury leaned on the strengths they’d shown all tournament: team chemistry and potent serving.

After being broken twice in the opener to fall behind by a set for the second time in five matches, Ram and Salisbury rallied past No. 7 seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares to secure a second Grand Slam championship with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The pair were previously victorious at the 2020 Australian Open, and also reached the final in Melbourne earlier this year.

Coming into the championship, Ram and Salisbury were broken just once in five matches en route to the final, holding in 65 of 66 service games. However, they lost twice that number of service games in the first set against Murray and Soares, who were looking to win third major title as a team and second US Open: from 3-2 up, Ram and Salisbury surrendered the next four games to drop their third set of their US Open campaign overall.

From there, though, the American-British pair showed the kind of form that’s taken them to a 37-9 record in Grand Slams since they teamed up in 2019: breaking serve four times combined across sets two and three, Ram and Salisbury wrapped up victory in an hour and 45 minutes.

The stat line sparkled for both teams in a high-quality final. Ram and Salisbury racked up 52 winners, plus 10 aces, to just 14 unforced errors, a display needed to overcome Murray and Soares’ stunning total of 32 winners to just four unforced.

WHAT IT MEANS: Since partnering up, Ram and Salisbury have evolved into one of the strongest and most consistent doubles teams on the ATP Tour. Since the start of 2020, they’ve contested three Grand Slam finals in seven events played, and overall, they have reached the semifinals or better in five of last seven majors.

The final was, in and of itself, a historic occasion: with Murray and Salisbury on opposite sides of the net, it marked the first time that two British players faced off in a Grand Slam men’s doubles final.

MATCH POINT: The pairs were presented their champions’ and runners-up trophies by the most decorated doubles team in tennis history, Bob and Mike Bryan. Earlier in the tournament, the 18-time Grand Slam champions, who retired last year, were honored by the US Open for their legendary careers.
