US Open 2021 LIVE: Simona Halep vs Elina Svitolina
After winning a bronze medal at the Olympic Games this summer, tying the knot with Gael Monfils in July, and winning her 11th hard-court title in Chicago, the No. 5 seed arrived at the 2021 US Open poised for success at a major.
After reaching the semifinals in her last appearance here in 2019, the same year she reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and the semifinals at Wimbledon, it’s no surprise that Svitolina is one of the first names in the conversation of best players to have not yet won a Slam. And considering how strong she looks in Flushing Meadows, this could be the year she takes her name out of that conversation.
The Ukrainian has not yet dropped a set en route to the quarterfinals, comfortably dispatching two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep in straight sets in Sunday’s fourth round, 6-3, 6-3.
Svitolina’s recent on-court success has been a long time coming for the 26-year-old, as she owns the longest current streak for consecutive weeks inside the Top 10 (205) dating back to May 2017. It’s been a four-year journey that the Ukrainian feels is now coming to fruition.
“I think the improvements started in Chicago. Every match I was playing better and better, trying to build on physically, mentally as well. I think I was more stronger, playing good tennis. I was moving better,” Svitolina said of her recent momentum swing. “I knew that I had to be really quick with my mind just to go [from winning Chicago] straight into Grand Slam, try to bring the same intensity, same tennis. In the end, I was playing quite good my first round, then the second round, and [in the third round] was even better I would say with my tennis.”
Her performance was even more convincing against No. 12 seed Halep on Sunday, breaking the Romanian five times and only dropping her own serve twice in the one-hour-and-11-minute contest.

He takes on Britain’s Dan Evans in the fourth round of the 2021 US Open on Sunday. The Russian is one of the favorites for the title.
